Dental emergencies can occur unexpectedly and may cause significant distress. Whether you break a tooth while eating, damage a restoration, or experience sudden pain, these situations can disrupt your daily routine, including sleep and work.
While we can help repair your smile and provide relief quickly, it's important to note that if you're facing a life-threatening emergency, you should immediately go to your local emergency department.
Common Dental Emergencies
Severe Tooth Pain
Sudden tooth pain, especially without an obvious cause, can indicate serious issues such as:
A broken tooth or broken filling
Cavities that have reached the inner layers of the tooth
Advanced gum disease
A tooth abscess
Exposed tooth roots
Impacted teeth
Chipped or Broken Teeth
Damaged teeth can cause anxiety, particularly if the damage is visible when you smile. If you have weakened teeth due to decay or habits like clenching, a tooth may break even from seemingly harmless things like biting into bread.
Lost Teeth
Losing a tooth due to an accident is common. If you act fast, we may be able to replant the tooth. If not, we may need to replace it with a dental implant or bridge.
To maximize the chances of saving the tooth, retrieve it carefully, rinse it gently with cool water (avoid touching the root), and place it back into the socket if possible. If you can’t reinsert the tooth, store it in a glass of milk.
Other situations that require quick attention:
A tooth that has been loosened or partially dislodged.
Objects stuck between your teeth that you can’t remove with floss or brushing.
Lost fillings or crowns.
A dental abscess or ‘pimple’ on the gum
Injuries to the gums or soft tissue in the mouth.
