It is a good idea to have a dental check-up every six to twelve months. Like many other medical conditions, early dental issues often do not hurt, and can be more easily and successfully treated if detected quickly.
Often by the time you experience pain or symptoms there may be significant issues, which can require more complex and expensive treatments to save the tooth.
When a cavity is small it often does not cause pain, however whilst it remains untreated it will continue to increase in size. The decay will eventually reaching the tooth nerve causing a toothache, which will then require either extraction or root canal treatment. If a cavity is very small it may be able to be easily managed through cleaning and improved dental hygiene, which your dentist can help you with. If the cavity is larger it may need a simple filling.
Even teeth that are infected occasionally do not cause pain. Dental infections can be present for an extended period of time without causing issues, however can flare up when your immune system is strained, leading to facial swelling or systemic infection. Dentists can detect these infections and advise on treatment options before these teeth have a chance to make you sick.
Gum disease also does not cause pain in most circumstances. Signs of gums disease include bleeding of the gums when you brush or floss, recession (tooth lengthening), or red and puffy gums. However, active gum disease can lead to loss of the tissues that keep the teeth in the mouth. As the disease progresses the teeth can become loose, and by the time pain presents there is often not much that can be done to save the teeth. During routine check-ups dentists can diagnose gum disease and organise treatment to prevent progression so you can keep your teeth for life.
Yes, we do treat children!
All children are encouraged to attend the dentist as soon as they have teeth. We are experienced at treating children in a caring and fun environment. We work closely with other dental specialists such as orthodontists; when this is the case we discuss and refer at an appropriate time.
At Polar Dental we make your child's first dental visit fun! The most important aspect of the child's first and early visits to the dentist is that they have a positive experience and learn how to look after their teeth. We play children's television shows on our TV during the appointment, and provide a fun surprise for children at the end. We discuss healthy eating and provide tips on maintaining good oral hygiene.
We look forward to meeting your child.
